I have the white metal but no scale. 3-4 years ago I tried to buy a silver one at a show unsuccessly but it was marked on the edge sterling. Don't have any idea if it comes marked or unmarked with sterling. #engineer wrote:
Does anyone have the weight of the white metal Dauphin County unlisted scd (113A on the John Raymond site)? I may have found one in the original box in silver. The one on the Raymond site is white metal.

you may want to update taking into consideration the recent auction results by jeff. Many of these pieces rarely come on the open market. You may also want to consider the raymend rarity study along with the inaccurate NGC census. Similar pieces of the same rarity should be worth the same amount. So if you see the sale price of one piece and then another piece of similar rarity comes up it they should be worth the same. Although in auctions pricing can be either high or low based on the number and deep pockets of the competing bidders at that time.

New puppy is running me ragged!LOL. I had some unlisted HK graded by ICG recently since I just wanted to get them encapsulated. Seems to me ICG grades tougher than NGC. Anyone else have experience with ICG grading of medals? I have a few things I would like to post for comments, hopefully the puppy will cooperate.

If you have ever wondered about how to figure out how rare a So Called Dollar might be, or how much one should cost, you might want to consider the following two information sources in addition to the small price guide insert that comes with the 2nd Ed of the SCD H+K book: 1) Check out John Raymond's Website for how many "sales" of SCDs have occured over the years at -- http://www.socalleddollar.com/study2ndED.html 2) Consider purchasing a copy of the "SmallForest" Guide. I have a 2010 paper copy that I got off a coin dealer on the internet. See http://www.medalzine.com for some background information. Of course, you can always e-mail Jeff Shevlin and ask his opinion, which is actually sometimes better than trying to figure out based on past data since Jeff has usually seen quite a bit behind the scenes.
I have all the small forest books. But I can't seem to find him anymore. Thought I would find him at medalzine as you listed but I cant hook up with medalzine as you posted?????

Hello Engineer! I missed you seems like you were gone for awhile. Missed your super graded shares with us. I think the confusion with NGC grading unlisted so calleds centers around the 2nd Edition book certifying 20 more so calleds and notifying NGC to certify them. If you visit John Raymonds Home Page you will see his Links to other So Called Dollar Stuff. 4th down is 2nd Edition Book Websight. When you get there 2nd from the bottom of the black boxes says New Discoveries. When this is clicked it shows you the 20 NEW listings that the 2nd Edition has officially sanctioned and they are the 20 that NGC has mysteriously been assigning HK numbers to that we can't figure out. But if their not god blessed and sanctioned by 2nd Edition NGC still won't grade them. his K

In 40 years of collecting So Called Dollars this is the first time that I have run across or seen this So Called. Was purchased by an English gentleman traveling by ocean liner in 1893 to Columbian World Fair. Took it back to England and now 119 yrs later is back to America. " "

Hi,
It was very difficult for me to find values for some of these Medals so I made a list based off completed Heritage and eBay sales and asking prices http://www.greatestcollectibles.com/socalled-dollar-prices/ for So Called Dollars. I hope some of you fins t useful or feel free to email me if you see I am off on any of the prices. I intend to update it once every two months or so.
thanks,

HK-611 New Haven CT Soldier's and Sailors Monument

Struck in 1887, this monument (currently located in East Rock Park) honors the residents of New Haven CT who gave their lives in the Revolutionary War, the War of 1812, the Mexican War, and the Civil War. It is 112 feet (34 m) high and 87 steps to the top. The following link has some cool historical pictures (http://www.ninthregimentcv.com/monuments/soldiers-sailors.html), and interesting information can be found in (http://www.chs.org/finding_aides/ransom/074.htm). edited by rjesinger on 5/11/2012

Sold in the range of $500-600. Nice piece. Seems like there is debate (Elder vs. Dickeson) as to who made these...

HK-580 designed by H.A. Sharpe, struck by Crofters, Inc, Chicago, IL around 1960. I have seen some of the 1970 restrikes and lesser quality aluminum pieces over the years (purchased a few purple and gold ones for fun). Does anyone own any of the Silver or Copper pieces?

Very nice. I have been trying to learn more about "slugs" and their associated medals (as above). I recently contacted Tom Jankovsky and was able to purchase an electronic copy of his guide to $50 slug facsimilies. If you are interested, it's the one advertised on the 3rd-to-last page in the second edition SCD book by H+K. It's a very nice guide to this area paralleling So-Called Dollar collecting. I think the above medal is listed in his guide as a 1927 Silver J927 medal. He states that the old Mote Cristo mine is one of the oldest mines in California. It's easy to find information about it through google.

I do have an example of HK-355, the copper version of the official medal, with its original sales envelop from Mayer & Bros.

I recently purchased this set of the Alaska-Youkon-Pacific Exposition mint struck official medals. I do not believe it is necessarily an "original" set since I don't know all the ways they were sold. The case they were stored in is marked Lash & Co., Toronto. They were a famous jewelry store in Toronto in the 1800s, but I've found no connection with the AYPE. Since the Seattle jewelry manufacturing company, Mayer & Bros. had the sales contract for the mint medals, it is possible they commissioned the cases. However, it would really surprise me if they did commission cases with the mark of another company instead of their own. I suspect it was a convenient case for a collector who put together their own set. I do suspect it is an old set and not a modern assemblage.
From left to right is the silver medal, the bronze medal, the copper medal, and the gold-plated example. The last three are all struck in the same copper alloy with three different mint finishes to create the bronze-copper-gold differences in appearance.

Weber had three in his collection and this piece (from the Weber collection, but not the auction) was the lowest graded of the three. In my opinion it has the best eye appeal of the three, although the one sold in the "Weber Auction" had superior surfaces and was graded MS-63.

Thanks for the additional info. I don't know much about pieces like this but I think they fit nicely with SCD's even if they don't fit the criteria strictly.
