Quote from Pioneer on April 7, 2013, 3:21 pmI recently acquired this piece that looks like an HK-27 type, but it only weighs 4 grams and appears to be made of some type of fiber... perhaps like wood? It appears to be layered in 3 pieces and glued. Does anyone know what this is... or have seen it? I'm assuming it is some type of fake... but not sure. I see some of the pieces from the centennial expo were made of a material "gutta percha"... which appears to be a type of wood, but i'm sure that those pieces are of much higher quality. Again, please post with any opinions on this piece.
gutta percha is a type of early hard rubber nothing to do with wood David Schenkman is the gutta percha specialist
HK-85 and Hk-86 come in gutta percha and there are like 10 different colors and your color is right but the gutta perchas were made like poker chips and I've never had a layered one which is most intrigueing for 1876. I like this piece and it does appear struck excellent find requiring investigation. Bet Bill H knows!

Quote from bill on April 8, 2013, 2:05 pmI occasionally find very odd pieces such as this. In most cases they appear to be contemporary from that time, but I have no idea why they were created.

Quote from Jeff Shevlin on May 4, 2013, 8:41 pmThe WESTS show was excellent again this year. Jeff and Bill gave a lively talk on the CA Midwinter Expo, and there was a good amount of audience participation. There were many good dealers in tokens and so-called dollars at the show. I bought some nice items from Jeff Shevlin and Larry Elman. Duane Feisel had his token auction, and there were at least 20 people attending with good deals to be had. I look forward to the next NTCA show coming this Labor Day. If you are not a member of NTCA, consider joining at: http://www.tokencollectors.org The monthly newsletters are interesting. Of course, everyone here also needs to join TAMS (Token and Medal Society) at: http://tokenandmedal.org
