HK-33B Liberty Bell Dollar

Can anyone tell me more about this SCD ? I am unable to understand what organization/person this commemorates any why...

Siloam Methodist Episcopal Church ,

The Gnaden Hutten Massacre is a terrible event that occurred in 1782 during the American Revolutionary War in which a Pennsylvania militia murdered 96 Christian Lenape Indians (28 men, 29 women, and 39 children). The details of the event are detailed in the following link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gnadenhutten_massacre The HK-707 so-called dollar was released in 1955 for the 200th anniversary of the massacre. The SCD has a bizzare design to me ("Good Luck" Horseshoe Reverse) given the horrific event that it commemorates, but I suspect it was sold as a fund-raiser in the 1950s for upkeep of the original site in Ohio. It seems to be quite a rare SCD as i've only seen two graded, but I happen to have both of the graded pieces. What probably isn't known to most SCD collectors is that the reverse on each of the two graded pieces is different... one has a medal orientation reverse, and the other has a coin orientation reverse. That might not seem relevant at first glance, but the fact that each of the two graded pieces is different only makes me believe that they were destined to remain as a pair/set.... in a spooky way, the upside down coin reverse parallels the upside down cross, a symbol of St. Peter's crucifixion and death. Perhaps the medal reverse symbolizes live. In any event, there are two different reverses, which should remain as a set as I see it, especially with the potential symbolism surrounding such a horrific event. For those who have seen the Johnny Depp move -- the Ninth Gate -- you probably can see further as to why I would keep these two as a set. Good luck hunting on variations on HK-908 and 909 if you dare... edited by rjesinger on 5/9/2015

Siloam Methodist Episcopal Church was one of the oldest/earliest church congregations in West Philadelphia. Was formed in the 1830's and was the main outreach programs for many years for Philadelphians. As this U.S. Exposition was held in Philadelphia the Soloam Methodist Episcopal Church had a large pavilion booth set up to minister aid information and to solicit contributions. The 1859 date is when the cornerstone and the building of the very large current stone church building was commenced. Fell on hard times in late 1900's and was sold to the Baptists. Now sitting empty.
