Recent Heritage Auction Prices

You wonder if the disparity in price between coins and medals will narrow at some point. Problem is coin dealers push coins because they are more readily available, although not as rare as medals in general. They can make a market in coins much easier than in medals/tokens. New books/websites/info will help to educate collectors and perhaps bring some coin collectors over. But I think it is cool that such rare items can be had for a small fraction of what a coin would cost.

Recently there was an HK174 NGC MS-62 that sold at Heritage for $352.50 (Lot #11619). I was just wondering if anyone has an explanation for such a high price for a common piece in average condition? So called dollar prices have been quite strong recently for rarer pieces in nice condition, but this HK174 was nothing special. Any ideas? Has someone lost their marbles?

The last 60 days or so is just about what I was thinking too. There was an auction at Heritage with some high prices on Dec 2nd. I read an article on Reuters recently that talked about pockets of enormous wealth that are accumulating in various areas throughout the world due to easy money policies, especially with the US Fed. I am wondering if coin investors are beginning to look seriously at high grade and/or exceedingly rare so called dollars as an investment. That 10 million dollar 1794 dollar that sold at Stacks a few days ago could be telling. Inflation of high quality assets just around the corner? With bottomed out interest rates, there is a LOT of money looking for a home. The market is itching for a nice collection of so called dollars or other medals to come on the market. Recently Stacks and Heritage have not had a whole lot to offer as far as so called dollars. Ebay has been mostly low priced items with a few nice expensive surprises. Where is the John Ford collection when you need it? Usually strong markets bring out nice collections. Lets see what happens.
