I wasn't sure as the front relates to GAR but the reverse speaks to the 25th anniversary of Gettysburg. I thought it should qualify. What do you think regarding various encampment medals issued that relate to veterans of the Civil War? Should they be considered in the context of SCD's? Would the Texas encampment medal ba an SCD?

That is an interesting question. Does the G.A.R. count as a military medal? If yes, then it would be excluded by Hibler & Kappan's definition. If it counts as a commemorative medal of national, state, or local significance? If yes, then it would be included by the same definition. I think there will always be a tension between being inclusive and being unmanageable.

HK-37 has a GAR reverse. I think as long as the side opposite the GAR side speaks to an event of local or national significance, which I believe would include Gettysburg then I would include the medal. Most GAR medals will not fit this criteria.

To me this does classify as a so called dollar because the reverse commemorates an important event in US history that all Americans can relate to. But does that mean that it fits into the original HK criteria? Well, probably not, because the original authors of HK did not include any GAR encampment medals. GAR medals are thus questionable for inclusion, but a few of them like this one are right on the "cusp". When all is said and done it may not really matter one way or another. It is a nicely made and rare medal. It may never be a candidate for one of the most important and desirable so called dollars, but it will probably always be worth owning.

It is difficult to fully understand what was the original criteria for HK inclusion. I do not believe strickly GAR medals were meant to be included. Given this has one side commemorating a national event and the encampment that took place at that time and at that location it seems to me like it honors the spirit and intent of the original authors, a gathering to commemorate the 25th anniversary of Gettysburg. I don't think the fact that it wa a GAR gathering should exclude it from any other type of gathering of peoples to celebrate a historic event. Just my thoughts.

I may be wrong here but from what I have seen mainly American Revolution battles have been included in So Called Dollars. The only exceptions are Fort Sumter and the sinking of the Maine. Civil war battle SCD's are probably going to be found mainly among medals made during the years 1961 to 1965. Many more historical SCD's should be included. I am thinking of events such as the Johnstown Flood and definitely the Cival War battles.

I believe that this should be included. It seems like it definitely meets the criteria. I just picked one up.
