Sculptor, Robert Aitkin, designed the official medal and the Medallic Art Co. prepared the dies. Bronze versions were struck by the U.S. Mint at the exposition. Obverse features winged Mercury opening the Panama Canal locks through which passes the ship Argo, the symbol of navigation, the setting sun reflecting on her sails. Reverse has two females, modeled by Audrey Munson who today is considered “America’s First Supermodel”, representing the two hemispheres entwined about earth and holding in their hands cornucopias. Struck in Bright Bronze.
