The Official Gold Plated Medal from the 1915 Panama–Pacific International Exposition held in San Francisco, California. Sculptor, Robert Aitkin, designed the official medal and the Medallic Art Co. prepared the dies. This has the original loop as made by the U.S. Mint and sold as such at the exposition. Sold by Farren Zerbe who had the contract to sell the U.S. Mint products at the exposition. Obverse features winged Mercury opening the Panama Canal locks through which passes the ship Argo, the symbol of navigation, the setting sun reflecting on her sails. Reverse has two females, modeled by Audrey Munson who today is considered “America’s First Supermodel”, representing the two hemispheres entwined about earth and holding in their hands cornucopias. Struck in Gold Plated bronze.
