At that time most of Europe considered the United States to be a third world country. Struck to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. This medal was designed and engraved by William Barber, struck at the Philadelphia Mint, and sold at the 1876 Centennial Exposition. Struck in Bronze.
