The Spanish–American war began after the U.S. Navy Battleship Maine was mysteriously sunk in Havana harbor, the result of an explosion. After Spain declared war on the U.S., Commodore George Dewey attacked and destroyed the Spanish fleet in Manila Bay, the war lasted less than four months. The following 1898 Treaty of Paris ceded ownership of Spanish territories, Puerto Rico, Guam and the Philippine Islands to the U.S.
