William Jennings Bryan, who virtually controlled the Democratic Party for 30 years, ran unsuccessfully for the U.S. Presidency in 1896, 1900 and 1908. After his unsuccessful campaign in 1900 against McKinley, Bryan edited a weekly political journal “The Commoner” after which he became known as “The Great Commoner.” Thomas L. Elder, a coin dealer in New York City, struck this satirical Bryan medal.
