This piece was struck to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the famed Pony Express which delivered mail from St. Joseph, Montana, to Sacramento, California from April 3, 1860, to October 24, 1861. The medal displays busts of the Pony Express founders Russel, Majors and Waddell on the obverse. Reverse depicts the famous painting by Herman Hansen depicting a pony express rider on horseback.
