The Pony Express was discontinued when the transcontinental telegraph was completed in late 1861. President Lincoln characterized the Pony Express as “an immortal service to the Union.” A telegraph key and a riderless horse are on the obverse. The reverse depicts a dismounted Pony Express rider leading his horse away, walking with his back to us, with telegraph wires in the background.
