Struck in 18K gold, weights 29.39 grams. With gold spot at $4,770 on May 7th, the melt value is $3,368. I do not know for sure the date this gold medal was struck, but I’m guessing it was in 1948, on the 100th anniversary of the discovery of gold at Sutter’s Fort in Coloma, California. The reverse legend implies that this may have been struck when gold was illegal to own. Edge marked “Medallic Art Co NY.”
