On the 100th anniversary of the Corps of Discovery's exploration by Lewis and Clark in 1804 & 1805 of the Louisiana Purchase Territory and their sighting of the Pacific Ocean, Portland hosted this exposition. Farrah Zerby landed the contract to sell the U.S. commemorative gold dollars and promptly engaged in a new marketing scheme similar to that of the 1904 St. Louis Exposition, including producing two fractional gold pieces. 18 so-called dollars were struck in various compositions for this exposition.
