Likely struck between 1857 and 1864 by Frederick C key, the father of William H Key. William worked for the U.S. Mint as an engraver from 1864 until 1892. From 1864 until 1869 William worked under Chief Engraver James B. Longacre. When Longacre died in 1869, William was apparently one of the candidates to succeed him, William Barber got the position instead. William worked at the U.S. Mint alongside Charles Barber and George Morgan.
