Dr. Elisha Kent Kane was a member of the first and commander of the second Grinnell Artic Expeditions that were attempting to rescue a prior vessel that attempted to sail through the Northwest Passage but never returned. Engraved by William H. Key who was the assistant engraver to William Barber from 1864-1885. Key’s signature is below the bust of Kane. Graded XF cleaned.
