Professor Montroville Dickeson had these struck by Robert Lovett Jr. at the outbreak of the Civil War, most likely in 1861. The NGC label incorrectly states this was issued by Thomas Elder, this was not, it was issued by Dickeson. The obverse features the interesting design of an eagle and a heron. Latin legend above translates to “The End is in Doubt”. It appears that the eagle, representing England, is standing on the heron, representing the United States, ready to kill it, but the beak of the heron is about to pierce the neck of the eagle, so the heron may become victorious. The eagle and heron design was originally issued on the $3.00 Continental Currency note issued on May 10th, 1776. Dickeson’s set of four different obverse medal designs supported the government issuing Legal tender notes to underwrite the defense of the Union during the Civil War.
