An original striking by Montroville Dickeson in 1861. Struck in White metal, which actually was probably silver-plated, giving the lustrous silvery fields. Professor Montroville Dickeson had these struck by Robert Lovett Jr. at the outbreak of the Civil War, most likely in 1861. The obverse features the Continental Dollar design credited to Benjamin Franklin. His set of four different obverse medal designs supported the government issuing Legal tender notes to underwrite the defense of the Union. There is a slight edge nick at 4:00 on the obverse.
