Beautiful mahogany brown surfaces. Medal commemorates the completion of the first transcontinental railroad. Authorized by Congress and designed and engraved by William Barber and struck by the U.S. Mint. Obverse features the bust of U.S. Grant and states “The Oceans United by Railway”. The reverse depicts a mountain scene with a train. Struck in Bronze. This early strike variety does not have Barber’s signature below the bust.
