The sixth in a series of eight medals with a large bust of Washington, engraved and issued by George Hampden Lovett to commemorate the Revolutionary Battles of 1776. Pursuing the retreat of George Washington’s Continental Army northward from New York City, British General William Howe landed troops further north, intending to cut off Washington’s escape route. Alerted to this move, Washington retreated further, establishing a position in the village of White Plains. Unable to hold their position, Howe’s troops forced Washington to retreat further north.
