The United States was sending a message to the world with the design of the official medal for the 1876 Centennial Celebration. The obverse features Liberty in a reclining position rising up, reaching for the stars, symbolizing that the United States will be recognized as a world power. At that time most of Europe considered the United States to be a third world country. Struck to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Authorized by Congress and struck in the Mint Exhibit at the Exposition.
