The Columbus bust on the obverse identifies the piece as a Columbian centenary commemorative. Microscopic CR on the bust truncation for Charles Reinsch, an engraver in Waterbury, Connecticut, who cut the dies for S. D. Childs & Company. The reverse inscription establishes its tie to the Pittsburgh Exposition.
