A state fund dollar struck by the state of Maryland to fund and commemorate their states participation at the Colombian exposition. Struck in unusually high relief, the obverse features an allegorical bust of Columbus. Reverse scene with turtles on the shore of the ocean. Signed with a “W” at 5 o’clock, engraver unknown. This variety was likely struck in 1893 or earlier since it omits the copyright information. The variety with the copyright information was probably struck in 1898, after the exposition.
