Near TOP POP. Only one graded finer, and nine certified. The Art Palace medal has only been observed with the Columbus Die 2 obverse. The halo that appears on the aluminum medal reverse pictured here is an artifact of striking on the thin aluminum planchets. As the metal flows to fill the relief of the head on the obverse, a small depression remains in the field on the reverse. The effect is observed on other Lauer aluminum medals. The gold-plated varieties were struck on rough-textured planchets.
