Unlisted in Hibler & Kappen. On the obverse is the city seal for Reading, Pennsylvania. It features a black shield with a gold band, symbolizing the German heritage of many of the city’s residents. The center of the shield bears the arms of the Penn family, the city’s founders. Other elements include a beehive representing industry and a salamander in flames symbolizing prosperity from furnaces.
