Thomas Elder, a coin dealer from New York, had these struck in 1910 to honor Brian Boru, King of Ireland 1002-1014. Brian Boru at the age of 88 lead the Battle of Clontarf when he broke Danish power of Ireland for all time, and was slain in the battle. He is considered the equivalent of George Washington in Ireland. Designed by Frank C. Higgins, modeled by Swedish sculptor John Gelert and struck by Medallic Art Company. NOTE: I, Jeff Shevlin, worked for Medallic Art Company in 2013-2014 as Director of Special Projects.
