Sculptor, Robert Aitken, designed the official medal. Silver and Gold-Plated medals were struck by the Philadelphia Mint, the bronze medals were struck at the exposition by the U.S. Mint. Obverse features winged Mercury opening the Panama Canal locks through which passes the ship Argo, the symbol of navigation, the setting sun reflecting on her sails. Reverse has two females, modeled by Audrey Munson who today is considered “America’s First Supermodel”, representing the two hemispheres entwined about earth and holding in their hands cornucopias.
