Prior to the U.S. entering into the World War that was wagering in Europe, Thomas Elder, who was very patriotic, issued this medal to unite American sentiment as one, and to make a satirical comment on “Kaiserists”, people who supported Germany during World War I. “No Room here for Hyphens” means the United States does not consist of hyphenated groups of people, like Irish-Americans, African-Americans, etc. we are all one group of people, Americans. Elder, who had acquired a number of Montroville Dickeson’s dies from 1861, reused Dickeson’s Confederation die, with the alter and all seeing eye above.
