Brian Boru was King of Ireland from 1002-1014 AD. Considered the George Washington of Ireland, at the age of 88, he broke Danish power over Ireland at the Battle of Clontart, where he was slain. The medal was issued by Thomas Elder, a coin dealer in New York City, to pay “tribute to the indomitable spirit of the Irish race.”
