This original Washington bust design was engraved by Mathias Nicole Marie Vivier around 1818 for the “Series Numismatica.” In the early 1830’s Charles Cushing Wright copied Vivier’s portrait design and struck a series of medals. George H Lovett copied the design for this Centennial medal. Microsignature for United States Medal Company below the bust. USMC had contracts with Lovett and Key who produced dies on their behalf. The authors believe this is most likely a Lovett creation as it was marketed by USMC along with other medals that were also engraved by Lovett.
