This medal honors the 200th anniversary of the Albany, New York, Congress of 1754 – historically the First American Congress – where Benjamin Franklin presented his plan for a federal union. Albany’s first public building, known as the Stadt Huys, later to be City Hall and the Courthouse, is depicted on the obverse. The reverse design is based on Ben Franklin’s famous cartoon first published in 1754 of a segmented serpent representing the Colonies with a message “Join, or Die.” Dies were engraved by Gilroy Roberts and struck at the Philadelphia Mint.
