The bust of Elisha Kent Kane, commander of the Second Grinnell Artic Expedition, is on the obverse. In the early 1800’s the British encouraged attempts to find the Northwest Passage, an ocean route hoped to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans via the artic. Kane commanded an unsuccessful recovery effort in 1850 to rescue two vessels that were lost in an attempt to find the Northwest Passage. Engraved by William H Key.
