Joseph Mayer & Bros, a Seattle jewelry manufacturing firm, struck this commemorative medal for the October 14th, 1911 ground breaking ceremonies. The obverse features a right facing bust of President Taft, who attended the groundbreaking ceremonies and turned the first shovel of dirt. The designer’s signature, M.P. Nielsen, appears to the left, behind Taft’s neck. The reverse depicts a standing laborer with a shovel. Building designs and themes appear in low relief in the distance.
