This medal was struck at the opening of the Manila mint in the Philippines, the only overseas mint ever established by the U.S. With President Wilson’s bust shown on the obverse, the goddess Juno Moneta guides a child striking medals in a coining press is depicted on the reverse – An apparent reference to the relationship between U.S. and Philippines. Many of the medals were dumped into Manila Bay just days prior to the Japanese invasion of the Philippines during WWII. Design concept by Clifford Hewitt and dies engraved by George T. Morgan.
