Designed by G.T. Brewster the dies were engraved at the Philadelphia Mint and the medals were struck in Buffalo, NY in the U.S. Mint Exhibit at the exposition. The purpose of the exposition and the symbolism on the medal were to promote trade and social relations with our Pan-American neighbors. Tragedy overtook the nation when President McKinley was assassinated while greeting citizens in the Temple of Music at the Exposition.
