The obverse portrays a smaller version of the Official Award Medal engraved by Augustus Saint Gaudens featuring Columbus wearing a cloak and armor, his head is upraised and arms spread as if giving thanks for finding land. The obverse was designed by Augustus Saint Gaudens, and the detailed reverse by Charles Barber. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint.
