The National Export Exposition held in Philadelphia, PA from 14 September to 30 November 1899 is mentioned in the so-called world via HK-644. While listed in the HK book as an R-5, the census on John Raymond's site (4 each of white metal (644) and bronze (644a)) and the NGC census (3 White metal and 0 bronze) seems to indicate that an R-6 to R-7 rating is likely more accurate. An unlisted bronze so-called dollar by S.H. Quint & Sons that I recently acquired is below (also on J. Raymond's website #93). This exposition seems to have been one of the early fairs meant to address the serious export issues of trade deficits, American production costs, and economic promotion of American products. There certainly seems to be a fair amount of controversy at this expo, including trying to explain why the production costs of American goods were far more than foreign competitors. Issues such as mechanized manufacturing, shipping costs, and fair trade practices (eg. with Europe) were discussed at this expo. Numerous foreign countries and corporations were invited to this expo, and in promotion literature for this expo, references to recreation at this expo included visiting the 1876 Centennial Expo Art buildings, Fairmont Park, and Independence Hall. If anyone has an HK-644 or other so-called related to this expo, please feel free to post.
