1911 Mobile Alabama Bicentennial HK-658 & HK-659

Attached are photos of a silver SCD from the 1911 Mobile Alabama Bicentennial. Mobile was founded in 1711 by Jean-Baptiste Le Moyne, Sieur de Bienville, a French explorer who wound up serving as the Governor of the Louisiana Territory for over 30 years. The other portrait on the obverse is of Pierre Le Moyne d'Iberville, founder of the French colony of Louisiana. The reverse flags show the five countries that ruled over Mobile over it prior 200 years ( France [1702], England [1763], Spain [1780], United States [1813], Confederate States of America [1861]). One of my interests in these pieces is there connections between (i) the historical founding of America [New France --> French-Indian vs. England War --> England vs. USA] and (ii) the connection between the port of Mobile and the Panama Canal. Both before and after the Panama Canal was built, Mobile AL served in various roles in benefiting from the canal's creation and use. Even to this day, and into 2014, the major seaport of Mobile hopes to benefit even more (more Gulf sea traffic) from the ongoing 2014 Panama Canal expansion project. The design of this piece is also eye-appealing as is the opportunity to own both the bronze and silver pieces as a set.
