Louisiana Statehood Centennial / Bicentennial

While I know removal of pieces from the SCD book creates controversy... I am not a fan of the HK-720 / 721 pieces. If primarily holed/looped material and/or plastic is excluded, why allow an item with an intentional irregular border that was also made of metal-plated plastic? I guess I could complain about the New Orleans pieces (HK-579 to HK-581) or the irregular border on HK-396, but the historical significance and/or notoriety of these other pieces perhaps comes into play for inclusion. Seems like deciding on including/excluding pieces from 1955 - today would be a tough job.... but i'd suggest only including better quality, historic SCD-size medals, celebrating historically significant events and/or made of quality metal. Feel free to disagree... edited by rjesinger on 11/18/2012

Thanks for the info. Well, then someone made a (really) nice profit... good for them, as I paid quite a bit more than $550. I did compare this one with another in an MS67 holder that a famous so-called guy owns.. and there are some differences in the color and edges, but all in all, the interesting thing is that most of the high points on these medals appear to have "rub..." which may very well be due to the way they were manufactured (not perfect high relief on the high points). This doesn't surprise me knowing a little about medals are made and the difficulties with high relief production.

They are quite rare. I do have one of the HK-396's graded by NGC. I will try and upload a picture in the next few days.

HK-396, a bronze medal issued in 1912, celebrates the 100th anniversary of the state of Louisiana Statehood. The H+K book states that the designer and number struck is unknown. I have only seen HK-396 for sale once in the past few years... and NGC only has a census of 5 slabbed... so it seems like a rare SCD. Does anyone own one that they'd want to post an image? I recently noticed that a Jeweler in New Orleans (Adler's Jewelers) is issuing an "updated" bicentennial version of an HK-396 medal in copper and silver... with "made-to-order" gold and platinum versions. See the website http://www.adlersjewelry.com for further details. E-bay has been selling some of the copper versions for $29.95. Image of the updated version attached... Now what was interesting to me was that this Jeweler claims that their firm is the one what minted in 1912... per their product description: " An updated re-issue of the coin Adler?s minted in 1912 for the Louisiana state centennial. The state seal is used on side 1 and the silhouette of the state is featured on the reverse side. A compass rose is used to indicate our orientation. Solid copper coin weighs 1.5 oz and measures 1 ??? in diameter. The box is a replica of Adler's 1912 box and each coin is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity. This limited edition production will only be available in 2012. " edited by rjesinger on 11/18/2012

I am looking for the HK-396 to add to my collection....1912 Louisiana Statehood Centennial Medal. Will pay a handsome price for a nice medal See attached Photos edited by devickn on 5/4/2013

I have not but have others looking for me. I would dearly love to have one and would pay a nice price. Last I had a chance at was on eBay and it sold for $563 when I had a max bid of $550 and another that sold for $200+ that I did not see in time to bid

devickn, these are very rare. I spoke with Jeff about these, and the slabbed ones can go for $1K - $1.5K. Attached is mine ... found at the national token show. Have you looked for this at national coin shows?

Compared the one that sold on eBay for $563 and the one you have....I am convinced they are one and the same

I'm just happy to see some coins hit the market.....hope one comes my way. I have seen differences in the coins as well, not sure why....maybe the pic I attached of one side of the dies explains it

After quite some time of searching and the making of a great deal, I am now the proud owner of HK-396....only thing that would make it better would be to have an original display box....that will be my next task....will post pics soon
