Question regarding diameter requirements

Interesting question. We are measuring pieces using digital calipers and recording the data to 2 decimal places. We will be reporting the measurements in the ranges observed. Where only one piece was available for study, the data has little meaning other than a single data point. Where many pieces were available the range gives some idea of the variation (and a measure of manufacturing tolerances). Not necessarily the most idea solution, but it is a step forward. In the end, the final decision is in the hand of the catalogers as to what goes into the book. The final decision for collectors is in whether they adopt and buy the book. We are looking to the discussions here to try to strike a balance between our own opinions and the opinions of collectors. Mint struck official medals (AYPE for example) will stay if HK included them. Some items clearly inappropriately included will move to the back of the book (an X category if you will that leaves the decision to the individual collector). Medals at the margins will always be a close call. How accurate is your caliper? Is 32.5 really 32.4 or 32.6? The debate will likely continue. For myself, I collect things I like or fit defined collecting topics. If it fits the scd designation, great. If it does not and it fits my definition, I still collect it, but I have more or less competition depending on whether it is in demand by other collectors or defined in other catalogs (Eglit for example).

The authors of HK allowed a number of pieces in that were between 32.5 and 33 mm, so my feeling is that rounding up is OK. I cant remember ever measuring a piece that measured exactly 32.5, but there may be some. On the top side, HK12 measures exactly 45.4 mm - Whew! how close is that! There are probably 30 to 40 times more commemorative medals that measure around 32mm than measure around 46mm. A lot of coin collectors probably think that such small differences in size should not really make any difference. Boy, talk about splitting hairs! The problem is when a person attempts to catalog and possibly publish groups of so called dollars. If strict criteria are not used, things may become a bit messy and random. A collector may not need to be so concerned about such small differences in size; but catalogers may need to be more precise.

I know the HK diameter requirement is a minimum of 33mm. My question is does that include rounding up. Another words if a medal has a diameter of 32.8mm would that medal be considered 33mm and thus meet the minimum diameter requirements.

I wonder how accurate the 33mm designated SCD's really are, I have never really checked the dia of these pieces something I should do

I thought i'd post this Silver Jubilee for Zukor medal from the same event year. The medalist was Pietro Montana and it was struck by the Medallic Art company and 11,883 were originally struck. This medal resembles a mason jar lid. It has six circular bands around the edge. In the center it shows the bust of Zukor with the years 1912 - 1937 next to him. At the top rim it reads PARAMOUNT SILVER JUBILEE FOR ADOLPH ZUKOR. Below the bust it reads IN COMMEMORATION OF - TWENTY-FIVE YEAR OF - DISTINGUISHED SERVICE - TO MOTION PICTURES. At the bottom rim it shows an hourglass with wings. edited by rjesinger on 11/8/2014
