Unlisted SCD's - what do people think

What do fellow collectors think of unlisted SCD's with regards to collecting the series? Are they something you collect or do you focus only on pieces listed in the book?

As far as unlisted SCD's are concerned there are many poeple who like to pick them up because they can get them pretty cheap sometimes and they think when my new book is published they will go up in price, which is prabably right. Most collectors however only want and collect what they see in the current H&K book, that is why unlisted SCD's don't usually bring that much money.

I guess I'll put my two cents in here. I own the so called dollar website that has the 293 unlisted so called dollars (socalleddollar.com). For me finding an unlisted piece that I have never seen before is one of the most interesting and exciting aspects of collecting SCDs. The unlisted pieces tend to be rarer than the listed ones. Why else were they not listed in the first edition?!! The problem sometimes though is deciding how so-called-dollarish a piece is. What would other collectors think about including it? Would the original authors have included it? And adding even more confusion is the possibility than today's criteria for what is a so called dollar may change in the future. One thing that seems to be true about the first edition of HK is that the authors did not put a piece in their book unless they actually saw the piece in person. They generally did not use other references or take other peoples word for anything. So the end result is that they tended to sacrifice completeness for the sake of accuracy. The inscription descriptions were quite accurate even with pieces that did not have photos. But the authors must have known that there were other pieces out there. I am sure that as years went by they ran across many others that they wish they had known about. Unlisted pieces tend to go for less money than listed pieces, but I have been surprised (and often outbid) at some of the prices that unlisted pieces bring. They are also harder to come by than they use to be. People seem to be hoarding them. I have also sometimes seen some fairly stiff competition for pieces that probably fall outside of HKs original guidelines. Today I saw what was probably a rare advertising piece on ebay with one side the same as the reverse of HK 171. It had a lot of bids, was in average condition, and sold for about $170.00.

John, I have enjoyed viewing your site over the years. I have some not on your site. Is there a way to post them to your site so there would be a central place for unlisted dollars? Hopefully Jeff's book will include many that are not listed in the original book. We definitely need a new book for collectors, and I believe Jeff's will have much more info on the SCD's including unlisted pieces.

Hi Engineer, I have thought about soliciting other images, but for the time being I am a bit reluctant to do so due to so much else going on in my life right now, but if you want to send me some good jpeg images with reasonably dark backgrounds, I guess I could eventually get them put up. You might want to send me complete inscriptions first to see if they would qualify.

Hi John, glad to see you are active and posting information on this site. Thank you. This site will eventually have photos of all the unlisted So-called Dollars known that will all be included in the new book I am working on. I have heard that the prices of unlisted pieces are going up lately.

I have collected a few Unlisted SCD that are related to the listed ones in some way. Generally, however, I need some reason to start collecting, otherwise there would be no end or perhaps no point. I am tempted to collect a few Unlisted for artistic merit alone, but generally, I am a purist and stay away.

Unlisted SCDs - I am very interested in the Heraldic Art Medals made in Cleveland, Ohio if someone would by chance have some for sale. In particular, I am needing a couple of the the Thomas Edison medal, thank you, Keith

I've used and enjoyed the so-called dollar website that John Raymond has graciously created and maintained over the years. In particular, I have enjoyed viewing the 293 unlisted so-calleds he has identified. I agree with John -- finding unlisted so-called dollars is interesting and exciting. I've picked up about 25 of the ones he has posted on his site. Along the way I've also picked up other unlisted pieces that seem to fit the so-called dollar definition. Recently I posted images for a couple of those here on the so-called dollar discussion forum. I suspect many collectors have accumulated anywhere from a few to several candidates for inclusion as so-called dollars. We all know (and appreciate!) that there are authors at work creating the next so-called dollar book(s). In terms of sharing information about unlisted pieces, is there a format that would be most helpful to them?
