The first in a series of eight medals with a large bust of Washington, engraved and issued by George Hampden Lovett to commemorate the Revolutionary Battles of 1776. At the Battle of Moores Creek Bridge on February 27, 1776, the Americans’ defeat of the British ended British authority in North Carolina and greatly boosted patriotic morale. In less than two months following the victory, North Carolina became the first colony to vote in favor of independence from Britain.
